Sports

🏀 The Canyon Cowboys boys' basketball team is riding high after a thrilling 60-57 win over Rancho Mirage in the CIF Southern Section Division 2A semifinals. After a long road trip to Palm Springs, the Cowboys are heading back with big smiles and a ticket to the next round! Senior Eric Kubel led the way with 25 points, and with key contributions from Isaac Yuhico and Chigo Osuji, Canyon held off a late push from the Rattlers to secure the victory. The Cowboys now turn their focus to Oak Park for Friday night’s semifinal showdown at Canyon High. With a spot in the state tournament already locked in, these Cowboys are fired up and ready for more. Let’s see if they can keep the momentum rolling! (The Signal)

Business

☕️ Dutch Bros is making moves in Santa Clarita, with plans for not one, but two locations in the works. The Oregon-based coffee chain has already received approval to build a spot near a McDonald's on Golden Valley Road, but it’s not stopping there. A second site is being eyed for the parking lot shared by Black Bear Diner and Barnes & Noble on Valencia Blvd. This one’s slated to be a 950-square-foot drive-thru with a two-lane queue and a speedy “runner system” to keep the coffee flowing quickly. Dutch Bros is known for its upbeat baristas and quick service, and they’re apparently ready to make a permanent mark on SCV with multiple locations in mind. No word yet on when either spot will open, but coffee lovers in the area are certainly in for a treat. Stay tuned!(The Signal)

Education

🦋 CSUN biology grad student Pryce Millikin is on a mission to figure out how Yucca Moths know when it’s time to pollinate Joshua Trees, and he needs your help! If you're living in or planning a visit to the Mojave Desert, Millikin’s asking you to use the iNaturalist app to track the flowering and fruiting of Joshua Trees. He especially needs records from the northwestern Mojave (think Lancaster to Lone Pine), Nevada, and western Arizona. If you spot a tree with flowers or fruit, snap a photo, mark it in the app, and upload it to the Joshua Trees and Yucca Moths project. Your observations will help Millikin crack the code on these unique desert plants and their tiny pollinators. It’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s a chance to be part of some important research! Get the details and join the effort HERE. (SCV News)

Our Staff’s Weekend Picks

Watch

“This movie came out in peak 2020, and honestly, it hit way too close to home at the time. It’s about two wedding guests stuck in a time loop, which sounds stressful, but somehow, it’s the most fun, weirdly heartwarming, and hilarious ride. Plus, it’s got sunshine, pool floats, and the perfect amount of chaos. If you missed it back then, now’s the time to fix that.”

—Kate Gullett, Editor-in-Chief

Eat

“As I’m originally from Kentucky, I have to give a shoutout to Kentucky Burgoo—the ultimate comfort food. It’s a thick, hearty stew made with a mix of meats and a bunch of veggies, and it’s basically required eating at any big gathering (especially Derby Day). Some say it’s not real burgoo unless you can stand a spoon up in it—I won’t go that far, but I will say it’s even better the next day!”

—EJ Gullett, Ad Partnerships Lead

Read

“I love books about poker and The Biggest Bluff is one of my favorites. The author Maria Konnikova is a journalist turned professional poker player who recounts her journey from poker novice to competing in the World Series of Poker. I highly recommend this book if you want a unique memoir to read this weekend…ante up!”
