THE DIGEST

Houston, We Have Funding 🚀

College of the Canyons just scored a $300,000 grant from NASA. That's right, our local college is now officially in the space race.

This cosmic cash injection will send about 80 COC students into orbit—figuratively speaking. They'll get mentorship, research opportunities, and a chance to rub elbows with the brainiacs at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Some lucky students might even land internships at JPL. Talk about a giant leap for student-kind!

Teresa Ciardi, the physical science and astronomy prof behind this stellar achievement, is over the moon. "This grant will bring enhanced recognition to our college," she says.

But here’s the really cool thing—COC is the only community college to participate in NASA's High-Altitude Student Platform for 8 consecutive years. They've also nailed five NASA RockSatX missions and three RockOn missions. At this rate, we might see a COC flag on the moon before long.

So, next time you look up at the stars, remember: some of those twinkling lights might just be COC students, reaching for the cosmos.

And the Emmy Goes To... CalArts! 🏆

Break out the champagne, SCV! Two of our own CalArts alums, Alyssa Dressman Lehner and Clara Plestis, just snagged Creative Arts Emmy Awards. That's right, we're basically Hollywood now.

Lehner (Film/Video MFA 2001) won for her editing wizardry on "The Voice." Apparently, she can cut footage as smoothly as the show's contestants hit high notes. This is her first Emmy, proving that persistence (and a CalArts degree) pays off.

Meanwhile, Plestis (Music MFA 2019) executive produced her way to victory with "Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic." Talk about a magical night indeed! When she's not collecting Emmys, Plestis is busy developing shows like "The Masked Singer." We're betting she can spot talent even when it's hiding behind a giant pineapple costume.

These wins prove that CalArts isn't just churning out animators for Disney. They're creating Emmy-winning multitaskers who can edit, produce, and probably juggle flaming torches while reciting Shakespeare. Watch out, Hollywood—the CalArts crew is coming for you!

Shaking Things Up on The Old Road 🛠️

The county's eyeing a $7.5 million facelift for The Old Road over Castaic Creek. Why? Because apparently, our bridge isn't earthquake-ready, and in California, that's a big no-no.

The plan? To retrofit this bridge faster than you can say "seismic activity." We're talking catcher blocks, concrete infill walls, and something called micropiles. It sounds like a sci-fi movie, but it's just civil engineering at its finest.

Mark Pestrella, the director of Public Works, promises this upgrade will "positively improve and enhance public safety." In other words, your drive over Castaic Creek won't turn into the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland during the next quake.

Construction is set to kick off in April 2025 and wrap up by November. So, mark your calendars for some potential traffic juggling. But hey, it's a small price to pay for a bridge that won't do the cha-cha during an earthquake, right?

The best part? Uncle Sam's chipping in $5.5 million through the Federal Highway Bridge Program. The rest? Well, let's just say the county's piggy bank is taking a hit for our safety.

So, next time you cruise over Castaic Creek, give a little nod to the soon-to-be-sturdier bridge. It's not just carrying cars; it's carrying our seismic peace of mind.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Valencia Gynecology Associates Joins the Henry Mayo Family 🩺

Dr. Don Nishiguchi's Valencia Gynecology Associates is now officially part of the Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital network. With thousands of deliveries under his belt and years of leadership at Henry Mayo, Dr. Nishiguchi is practically family already. Now it's just official on paper!

But this isn't just a change of letterhead, folks. This merger means more integrated care for SCV residents. Dr. Nishiguchi has been a key player on Henry Mayo's Medical Executive Committee and even served as Medical Chief of Staff from 2018 to 2021. Talk about wearing multiple hats!

Kevin Klockenga, Henry Mayo's president and CEO, couldn't be more thrilled. He's practically doing cartwheels down hospital corridors (okay, not really, but he's very excited). This partnership is set to enhance women's healthcare in our community, combining Dr. Nishiguchi's expertise with Henry Mayo's resources. It's a win-win for SCV residents, especially those expecting little Santa Claritians in the near future!
