Where Academia Meets Area 51 👽

Mark your calendars, conspiracy theorists and cosmos enthusiasts alike. On November 1st, College of the Canyons is hosting an event that's out of this world – literally.

Dr. Jason Wright, Penn State's premier alien aficionado, is gracing us with "Intelligent Ways to Search for Extraterrestrials" (And one can only assume "leaving your porch light on" didn't make the cut)

This cosmic carnival isn't just lectures and PowerPoints. You'll get up close and personal with telescopes, courtesy of local astronomy clubs. It's your chance to spot intelligent life – a rarity these days, even on Earth it seems.

The event runs from 6 PM - 9:30 PM at COC Canyon Country campus. It's free, which is more than we can say for that "authentic" moon rock you bought on eBay.

A Situation That Doesn't Pass the Smell Test 🗑️

Today, the Chiquita Landfill Community Advisory Board in convening to discuss what's quickly becoming SCV's least favorite perfume.

With 13,000 odor complaints, Chiquita Landfill is giving new meaning to the phrase "hot mess." The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued nearly 200 violations, a number that stinks almost as much as the landfill itself.

They're currently storing about 200 tanks of leachate, a cocktail of chemicals that would make even a hazmat team raise an eyebrow. The polymer cap meant to contain odors is running fashionably late, much like your neighbor who swears they'll take their trash cans in "tomorrow."

The meeting's at 6 PM at Castaic Library. Attend in person or virtually – either way, no scratch-and-sniff cards will be distributed.

SCV Turns Purple 💜

Over the weekend, Santa Clarita was awash in purple.

The Purple Walk Domestic Violence 5K brought out hundreds of supporters, led by Kimberly Marx-Steele, owner of The Bar Method and living proof that the strongest cores aren't just found in Pilates classes, but in survivors.

Nikki Buckstead, CEO of Child & Family Center who hosted the event reminded us of the sobering 37% increase in domestic violence reports this year. These funds keep hotlines open, shelters stocked, and hope alive.

Tesoro's Senior Expansion 🏘️

Tesoro Del Valle developer Lennar is knocking on the Santa Clarita City Council's door with an ambitious proposal. They're looking to add 108 more market-rate homes to their Tesoro Highlands project, specifically designed for our wisest community members. This expansion could transform the area into a thriving neighborhood that caters to a diverse range of residents. With the potential for new amenities and community spaces, Tesoro Highlands might just become the crown jewel of Santa Clarita's housing developments. Who knows, we might even see a surge in local book clubs and gardening societies - activities that enrich our community regardless of age.

But wait, there's more! The developer is also seeking an extension on bridge-widening deadlines, as the project's cost has taken an unexpected leap from $4.8 million to $12.7 million. It seems even bridges are feeling the pinch of inflation these days. While the delay might cause a few sighs, it's a reminder that good infrastructure, like fine wine, takes time to perfect.
