Chiquita Landfill Drama Continues 🚫
For those keeping track of the saga surrounding the Chiquita Canyon Landfill (which, let’s be honest, feels like a never-ending episode of bad reality TV), a request for a state of emergency was officially denied by Gov. Newsom. Lawmakers had been pushing for state intervention due to ongoing health concerns in nearby communities like Castaic and Val Verde, where residents have been dealing with the lovely smells and possible health risks of the landfill’s emissions.
State officials said an emergency declaration wouldn’t help right now and that state and federal resources are already in place. For the residents living closest to the landfill, this denial feels more like a slap in the face. There’s been talk of cancer clusters, with residents reporting nosebleeds, headaches, and other health issues linked to the landfill. Despite these concerns, Chiquita Canyon continues to deny health impacts, though they’ve handed out some air purifiers and $9 million in relief payments.
So where does that leave us? For now, lawmakers and community leaders continue to push for more studies, and residents are left hoping for cleaner air—one way or another.

CalArts Grads Get Presidential Praise 🏅
CalArts just made waves in D.C. On Monday, two CalArts alums, Carrie Mae Weems and Mark Bradford, received National Medals of Arts at a White House ceremony. This isn’t just any award; it’s the highest honor an artist can get in the U.S. Weems, known for her groundbreaking multimedia work, and Bradford, who’s famous for using found materials in his large-scale abstract pieces, joined an elite club of creatives who’ve inspired the world.
If you’re thinking, “This is all cool, but why should I care?”—well, because these artists’ works challenge how we see the world, especially around issues like race and gender. Plus, these CalArts grads are putting SCV’s creative community on the national map, proving once again that big things come out of our local institutions.
SCV Cannabis Convos 🍃💬
L.A. County is tossing around the idea of bringing cannabis businesses—dispensaries, cultivation, and more—to the unincorporated areas of SCV. If you’re in the city of Santa Clarita, you’re not in the mix just yet, but nearby spots could see some new neighbors.
The plan includes up to five dispensaries per district, with 600-foot buffers from schools, parks, and libraries. And it’s not a free-for-all—there are rules like 24/7 video surveillance, on-site security, and annual permits to keep things in check.
Opinions? Oh, there are plenty. Some folks are worried about how close these shops could pop up to residential areas, while others are eyeing the potential boost to the local economy. The county’s open to hearing it all—comments are being accepted until Nov. 15.
Got thoughts? Head over to the county’s cannabis page to share your two cents HERE!

Blake Lively’s Boozy Biz Hits Princess Cruises
Blake Lively’s drink lines, Betty Booze and Betty Buzz, have set sail with Princess Cruises. If you’re cruising soon, forget the usual piña colada—Blake’s got your drink game covered.
Betty Booze is here for the cocktail crowd, with Sparkling Bourbon and Peach Honey Mint or Sparkling Tequila and Smoky Pineapple (because why not?), while Betty Buzz offers non-alcoholic options like Sparkling Lemon Lime for when you’re feeling fancy without the buzz.
Basically, if you’re tired of the same old cruise drinks, Blake’s concoctions are here to shake things up. Next time you’re on deck, grab one and toast to living your best life.
