Cats, Comedy & a Caribbean Block Party

Plus: yoga with adoptable pups, rom-coms under the stars, and why David March Park is closing.

Good morning, SCV. This is The SCV Insider. End of August means two things: school supply aisles are full of spiral notebooks, and the rest of us are spiral-noting how sweaty we are. Don’t worry… Fall is allegedly “soon.”

In today's SCV Insider:

  • Upcoming events 🥳

  • David March Park closes for major upgrades 🌳

  • Comedy about asylum patients with a twist (and a cat) 😼

Let’s get into it.

🌳 David March Park is off to Park Bootcamp. Starting Monday, this SCV staple is closing for a few months to bulk up on new features: think outdoor gym equipment for your burpee bragging rights, a shiny new basketball court, a covered picnic pavilion for your sandwich shade needs, and a playground that won’t roast you like a rotisserie chicken mid-slide. Bonus: extra parking so you can actually find a spot without summoning parking-lot rage. The park’s “soft reveal” is slated for January, but the full expansion (including a 116-step stair climb for your Rocky moment and a baseball field with shaded seating) drops in spring 2026. Until then, cheat on David March with Plum Canyon or Skyline Ranch Park — we won’t tell. (The Signal)

Business

🍷 A “Taste” worth the drive. Santa Paula’s serving up its 4th annual Taste of Santa Paula on Thursday, Oct. 2 from 5–8 p.m. Think of it as a progressive dinner party with better wine and fewer dishes to wash. Santa Paula’s Historic Main Street transforms into a foodie stroll, with live music, door prizes, and even a poker walk if you like your snacks with a side of cards. On the menu? Everything from Clos Des Amis wines to Gunsmoke BBQ, Sister’s Asian Eatery, and Rabalais — with more restaurants dropping soon. Tickets are $50 (includes six tastings) and this thing sells out fast. Grab yours before they’re gone! (SCV News)

Entertainment

🎭 Secret Sanity checks into The Main this Friday! The Big Sandwich Theatre Company is back with its fifth original comedy, Secret Sanity, and yes — it’s about a group of asylum patients who may or may not be “crazy like a fox.” Written by Wade Bradford and Christopher Flowers, the play follows longtime patients (who’ve all pled insanity to dodge prison time) as they adjust to two new arrivals: Eve, falsely accused of poisoning her coworker, and Leo… the Cat. Performances run Aug. 22–31 with evening and matinee shows at The Main in Old Town Newhall. Tickets are $20 at AtTheMain.org. Grab yours before the voices in your head talk you out of it.
