Local Stories

🦋 Santa Clarita, break out your cameras — the butterflies need us. As part of California Biodiversity Day (Sept. 6–14), the state is asking residents to snap and report western monarch butterflies, whose numbers have dropped so hard scientists say there’s a 95% chance they’ll go extinct by 2080. Not great.

Here’s your mission, should you choose to accept:

  1. Download the free iNaturalist app.

  2. Catch a monarch mid-flutter (or mid-snack on your milkweed) and snap a pic.

  3. Upload your sighting to help scientists track their migration.

And yes, your Ring cam footage of a butterfly dive-bombing your geraniums counts — you’re basically filming a NatGeo special. Monarchs roll through Santa Clarita paseos, Central Park, even your HOA-approved front yard shrubs, so don’t sleep on spotting them locally.

Bonus points: sign the petition to get monarchs officially protected under the Endangered Species Act at calparks.org/monarchthreat. Your selfies can wait — butterfly glamour shots take priority this week. (SCV News)

Business

🚌 Math was never this brutal: Santa Clarita’s Old Town Newhall trolley pilot racked up $25,000 for 87 rides — that’s a whopping $287 per butt in a seat. The program ran eight weekends in July and August, looping between theaters, galleries, and parking lots with all the bells and whistles (GPS tracking, QR codes, text alerts).

Locals did appreciate the effort — especially with parking about to get even tighter thanks to a 98-unit condo-and-retail project — but the timing left something to be desired. Riders pointed out that starting service at 2 p.m. doesn’t help folks trying to make a 2 p.m. matinee.

Of the 87 rides, 48 started at the 9th & Main parking structure, with Saturday being the busiest day by far. For now, the City Council’s next move is TBD: double down and tweak the hours, or leave the trolley dream parked in neutral. (The Signal)

Non-Profit

💜 Lace up for a cause, SCV. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s crew is kicking things off with a casual mixer at The Local Pub & Grill on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 5:30–7:30 p.m.—a thank-you hangout for past walkers and a welcome for first-timers. The main event steps off at Bridgeport Park on Saturday, Oct. 4 (site opens 8 a.m., ceremony 9 a.m., walk 9:30 a.m.). There’s no registration fee, but fundraising fuels the mission: as of now, 171 participants/60 teams have raised $49K—about 31% of the $160K goal. Join a team, volunteer, or donate and help turn those blue, purple, yellow, and orange pinwheels into progress. (The Signal)
