Hop into SCV’s Easter Weekend—Egg Hunts, Brunch & More 🐰

SCV’s Easter plans are locked in—egg hunts, spring fun, and all the good vibes.

Good morning, SCV. This is The SCV Insider. This weekend, may your Easter baskets be full, your Cadbury eggs be intact, and your hard-boiled eggs all accounted for—unlike the one my family and I lost during an egg hunt as a kid that wasn’t found until… well… let’s just say we didn’t see it again until it had become a biohazard with a “shell”.

*shudders*

In today's SCV Insider:

  • This weekend’s events 🤩

  • Got Easter plans? 🐰

  • Valencia High alum Masters finish ⛳️

🎨 Calling all SCV artists! The City of Santa Clarita is launching its first-ever TAP Card Artwork Competition—and your art could be the star of it all. One lucky winner will have their original design printed on a limited-edition Santa Clarita Transit TAP card (yes, the kind you actually use to ride the bus), plus receive a $200 stipend, a feature on the city’s website and social media, and an invite to a special unveiling event in October. Open to all ages and mediums—from painting to digital art. Deadline to submit: June 14, 2025. Let your art hit the road—literally. (The City of Santa Clarita)

Entertainment

💃 Mark your calendars for a night of pure movement magic: CSUN’s Kinesis: Emerging Choreography kicks off Wednesday, April 23, with 15 original works from the university’s rising choreographic talent. From Hip-Hop to Contemporary, this high-energy showcase at Plaza Del Sol celebrates the art of storytelling through dance—bold, expressive, and entirely student-driven. 🎟️ Tickets are $10 for students/seniors and $20 for adults. For more info or to grab your seat, call (818) 677-2488 or contact Mariko Iwabuchi at [email protected].

Business

🏗️ Plot twist in Canyon Country real estate: That 20-acre MetroWalk project near Lost Canyon Road is shifting gears—again. What was once a plan for nearly 500 rental units (including 50 affordable senior homes) is now leaning more condo than apartment, with fewer overall units and a big question mark around when—or if—the affordable piece gets built. The Planning Commission approved a few key changes this week, including smaller setbacks between units, more flexibility on when the affordable housing has to happen, and permission to swap apartments for for-sale homes. The developer says it’s a mix of tough market conditions, expensive insurance, and a financing landscape that’s brutal for affordable housing. The city says this new timeline gives those 50 affordable units a better shot at actually getting built. Still, if financing doesn’t come through, the developer’s already raising the idea of paying a fee to skip them entirely—something the city hasn’t signed off on yet. Let’s just say: this conversation is far from over. (The Signal)

Sports

⛳️ Valencia High alum Max Homa made a strong showing at this year’s Masters, finishing tied for 12th at 4-under par—his second consecutive top-20 finish at Augusta. After a rocky first round (+2), Homa battled back with a clutch second-round performance and held steady through the weekend, ultimately earning $462,000 for his efforts. It’s been a rough patch for Homa, who hadn’t made a cut since last summer and recently overhauled his swing and caddie team. But it seems like things are turning around—despite a truly unlucky shot that literally bounced off a fairway marshal mid-round. A comeback in progress? We’re rooting for it. (Oh, and in case you missed it: Rory McIlroy won in a playoff, completing his career grand slam and taking home a cool $4.2M and the green jacket.) (The Signal)

Education

📚 Paging through history at Saugus High: The school’s 15th annual Women in History presentation gave students a front-row seat to literary legends like Jane Austen, Emily Dickinson, and Mary Shelley—brought to life by their own peers and teachers. Each author was portrayed in costume, with live ASL interpretation and a thoughtful monologue diving into their life and legacy. Students Abigail Mansur, Aminat Arowolo, and Lan Miranda earned $100 COC bookstore gift cards for their standout performances, and longtime organizer Debbie McIntosh was honored for 38(!) years of leading the program. Since 2006, the event has spotlighted 226 women—proof that when it comes to amplifying female voices, Saugus is booked and busy. (The Signal)

Watch

“If Season 1 broke your heart, Season 2 is here to stomp on it. The world’s still brutal, the infected are still terrifying, and the storytelling? Still top-tier. Buckle up—this season’s not pulling any punches.”

—EJ Gullett, Ad Partnerships Lead

Eat

“We’ve been fans of Brewery Draconum for a while now—great beer, solid food, and one of the best outdoor spots in Old Town Newhall (newly remodeled!). We got to check out their Brews & Chews event earlier this year (tough job, I know), and now they’re hosting an Easter brunch this weekend. If craft beer and brunch in a beer garden sounds like your kind of Sunday, you know where to go.”

—Kate Gullett, Editor-in-Chief

Read

“If you love historical fiction, Pip Williams’ Dictionary of Lost Words is a hidden gem. The story follows a fictional girl named Esme who grows up during WWI in the scriptorium where the Oxford Dictionary is being compiled. She collects her own “lost words” that are intentionally left out of the dictionary, most of the words relate to the language of women’s experiences. This is a fun and heartwarming read for history buffs!”
