STEM-ulating Minds at Valencia High đ§
Valencia High School just cranked STEM education from 'mild curiosity' to 'all-out science extravaganza' with its second annual L.A. STEM Conference. Organized by seniors Nishika Manjeshwar and Nikhilesh Kalyanaraman, this event wasn't just for the localsâit was open to all of L.A. County, turning it into a full-blown STEMpalooza.
The event brought in experts like Tom BeguĹĄiÄ from Caltech, neurotech CEO Soulaimane Bentaleb, and Boston Scientific engineer Saeed Moosaviâbasically, people with mind-bending careers in quantum computing, electrophysiology, and other things that sound like sci-fi magic.
But the best part? It wasnât one of those boring sit-and-listen gigsâstudents got to flex their engineering muscles by launching catapults made out of craft supplies. Because really, whatâs the point of STEM if youâre not throwing stuff?
Manjeshwar says itâs crucial to get high schoolers hooked on STEM before college sweeps them away into other distractions. Judging by the energy at the conference, Valenciaâs event hit the markâproving once and for all that, yes, science can out-cool TikTok.

Changing Lives in Kenya đ
David and Christina Stratton arenât your typical Santa Clarita couple. Instead of spending their weekends wine tasting on Main St., theyâre in Kenya, helping keep young girls safe and in school. Their nonprofit, L Squared, is on a mission to provide reusable sanitary pads to schoolgirls who otherwise have to stay home during their periodâa basic necessity thatâs all too often out of reach in rural Kenyan communities.
âIf the girls canât go to school, theyâre at risk of being abused, sold off, or worse,â Christina explained. The solution? Reusable âPrecious Padsâ that give girls a chance to continue their educationâwhich, by the way, drastically increases their chances of escaping poverty.
L Squaredâs commitment doesnât stop at padsâtheyâre also building kitchens, farming land for meals, and even creating sports and arts programs. As David puts it, âItâs about passing down a legacyâleaving the world better than we found it.â
Sometimes, changing the world starts with something as simple as a piece of fabric.
