Have Local Impact 📝

The City wants your input, folks! Every year, we get a chunk of funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help out our community—but they actually need your help to figure out where it should go.

Think we need more affordable housing? Better community facilities? More human services? Take the Community Needs Assessment survey and make your voice count. Your feedback will decide how the City spends the money in the next few years—so if you’ve got opinions, now's your chance to put them to good use.

Speak now, or forever hold your complaints about where that money ends up.

STEM-ulating Minds at Valencia High 🧠

Valencia High School just cranked STEM education from 'mild curiosity' to 'all-out science extravaganza' with its second annual L.A. STEM Conference. Organized by seniors Nishika Manjeshwar and Nikhilesh Kalyanaraman, this event wasn't just for the locals—it was open to all of L.A. County, turning it into a full-blown STEMpalooza.

The event brought in experts like Tom Begušić from Caltech, neurotech CEO Soulaimane Bentaleb, and Boston Scientific engineer Saeed Moosavi—basically, people with mind-bending careers in quantum computing, electrophysiology, and other things that sound like sci-fi magic.

But the best part? It wasn’t one of those boring sit-and-listen gigs—students got to flex their engineering muscles by launching catapults made out of craft supplies. Because really, what’s the point of STEM if you’re not throwing stuff?

Manjeshwar says it’s crucial to get high schoolers hooked on STEM before college sweeps them away into other distractions. Judging by the energy at the conference, Valencia’s event hit the mark—proving once and for all that, yes, science can out-cool TikTok.

Changing Lives in Kenya 🌍

David and Christina Stratton aren’t your typical Santa Clarita couple. Instead of spending their weekends wine tasting on Main St., they’re in Kenya, helping keep young girls safe and in school. Their nonprofit, L Squared, is on a mission to provide reusable sanitary pads to schoolgirls who otherwise have to stay home during their period—a basic necessity that’s all too often out of reach in rural Kenyan communities.

“If the girls can’t go to school, they’re at risk of being abused, sold off, or worse,” Christina explained. The solution? Reusable “Precious Pads” that give girls a chance to continue their education—which, by the way, drastically increases their chances of escaping poverty.

L Squared’s commitment doesn’t stop at pads—they’re also building kitchens, farming land for meals, and even creating sports and arts programs. As David puts it, “It’s about passing down a legacy—leaving the world better than we found it.”

Sometimes, changing the world starts with something as simple as a piece of fabric.
