From Magic Mountain to... Mount Olympus? 🏅

This is The SCV Insider. Here to distract you from the horrible fact that it’s Monday. (No promises though 😬)

Good morning, SCV. This is The SCV Insider. Here to distract you from the horrible fact that it’s Monday. (No promises though 😬)

Also, as we approach the anniversary of September 11th this week, one story in our Digest each day will be dedicated to honoring a life lost on that tragic day. We invite you all to join us in remembering these individuals and reflecting on their stories.

If you have a personal story or tribute you'd like to share, reply to this email—we'd be honored to feature it this week 🫶

In today’s SCV Insider:

  • Remembering 9/11: John Bergin 🇺🇸

  • SCV's 2028 Olympic Aspirations 🏅

  • A Postal Tribute 📬

Let’s get into it.

— Kate

Remembering John Bergin 🇺🇸

John P. Bergin, 39, was a firefighter whose life exemplified service and community. A member of Staten Island's Rescue Co. 5, John was known for his welcoming nature and ability to bring people together. His home was the neighborhood hub for celebrations and gatherings.

As a devoted husband and father of three, John balanced his heroic work with active involvement in his children's lives, coaching youth sports and planning family adventures. He had recently achieved his dream of owning a local bar, the Grant City Tavern.

On September 11, 2001, John responded to the call at the World Trade Center with characteristic courage. His legacy of community service, family dedication, and friendship continues to inspire all who knew him.

SCV Eyes Olympic Gold (or at Least a Participation Ribbon) 🏅

Santa Clarita is setting its sights on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The City Council, showing the kind of ambition usually reserved for New Year's resolutions, is exploring how our beloved SCV can play a part in this global extravaganza.

Now, we’re not talking about hosting the synchronized swimming competition in the Santa Clara River (though that certainly would be a sight to behold—especially without the water!) Instead, SCV Transit might become the official Olympic shuttle service. That's right, we're going for gold in the little-known sport of "Athlete Transportation."

LA28 wants a car-free Olympics, which is great news for anyone who's ever tried to park in Los Angeles. It's less great news for LA traffic, which might finally achieve its final form: a parking lot so complete it gets its own zip code.

Stamping A Legacy 📬

In a touching gesture that honors one of Santa Clarita's finest, the Post Office on Creekside Road has been officially renamed after William "Bill" Reynolds. This decorated Vietnam veteran and tireless advocate for his fellow servicemembers has left an indelible mark on our community.

Reynolds, known for his dedication to preserving veterans' stories, authored over 100 biographies of local veterans. His work ensured that the sacrifices and experiences of these brave men and women will never be forgotten. Through his writing, Reynolds gave a voice to those who served, creating a lasting legacy that extends far beyond the walls of any building.

The renaming of the post office stands as a testament to Reynolds' impact on Santa Clarita. It's a daily reminder of the difference one person can make when they dedicate themselves to serving others. As we go about our routines, mailing letters or picking up packages, we'll now have a moment to reflect on the contributions of veterans like Bill Reynolds.

In a world that often moves too fast, this renamed post office asks us to pause and remember. It reminds us of the power of community, the importance of honoring our heroes, and the enduring impact of a life well-lived in service to others.

Next time you visit the William Reynolds Post Office, take a moment to appreciate the man behind the name.

LOCAL BUSINESS

Get In Touch with Your Feelings 🎬

This Friday, the Child & Family Center is hosting a free screening of "Inside Out" that'll have you feeling all the feels. Join fellow Santa Claritans for an evening of emotional intelligence disguised as entertainment.

Parents, this is your chance to finally put a face to that little voice in your head that questions your life choices. Kids, it's an opportunity to understand why Dad turns red when he assembles IKEA furniture.

So bring the family, leave your emotional baggage at the door (or don't, the movie's kind of about that), and get ready for a night of laughter, tears, and everything in between. It's cheaper than therapy and more fun than explaining to your kids why you're crying during a Pixar movie. Again. (ed note: Don’t even get me started about Bing Bong)

Remember, in Santa Clarita, we don't suppress our emotions – we just project them onto animated characters!!!
