Local Stories

Community

🪖 Local World War II vet Don Kuehl celebrated his 100th birthday with a pancake breakfast at Crazy Otto’s Diner in Canyon Country, flanked by a crew of fellow vets and local dignitaries. He enjoyed the spotlight while local big shots, like Rep. Mike Garcia, gave him the props he deserves. Known for his sharp mind, Kuehl still practices Morse Code and is learning sign language for his autistic grandniece. His fellow veterans praised his service and wit, and local bakery owner Agustin Prieto made him a special military-themed cake. Kuehl, ever the inspiration, joked about getting into a biplane—he’s not slowing down anytime soon! (The Signal)

It’s the perfect chance to meet and support our talented local authors and illustrators. Thinking about becoming an author yourself? Come mingle, get inspired, and learn how to participate in future fairs. Hosted by Store Manager Diana, this event is sure to be an entertaining afternoon for book lovers of all kinds!

Business

🧵 Joann Fabrics is closing 500 stores across the country, and unfortunately, our local spot at is on the list. After filing for bankruptcy not once, but twice in the past year, several California locations will be joining the closure club. From Bakersfield to Huntington Beach, crafters are feeling the loss of their go-to fabric and crafting supplies hub. While the Santa Clarita store isn’t closing just yet, they’re waiting for the green light from bankruptcy court to make it official. Guess it's time to find a new place to get lost in glitter and buttons. (SCV News)

Education

➗ Local students from Rancho Pico Junior High and Rio Norte Junior High are representing Santa Clarita at the state MATHCOUNTS competition after a stellar performance at the regional event on February 8. Rancho Pico’s team, with members Nathan Lee, Christopher Lew, Nimrat Dhaliwal, and Sai Tej Chikati, earned a trip to the state competition after finishing third, with Nimrat snagging an individual third place in the countdown round. Rio Norte’s Ellie Che and Esha Mandadapu also made their mark—Ellie securing fourth place and Esha placing sixth. These students are putting Santa Clarita on the map in math and showing our community just how much talent we’ve got!. (SCV News)
