🌧️ Santa Clarita’s Rain Barrel Purchase Program is back on Feb. 22, and here’s why you should care: it’s an easy way to catch free water and help conserve the stuff we definitely don’t want to run out of. For just $40 (plus tax), you can grab up to two 50-gallon rain barrels—perfect for watering your garden, washing the car, or pretending you’re a rainwater guru. Each barrel comes with a mesh screen to keep out the bugs (because gross), and it’s all about saving water and money. There’s even a free class to teach you how to use it—no rain barrel required to attend, but it might make you feel a little more green inside. (The Signal)

🎤 Get ready for a night of drama, passion, and seriously epic music as Mission Opera presents Carmina Burana on March 1 at Canyon High School! This classic piece, written in 1936, is all about fate, love, and life’s wild unpredictability. With over 70 singers, a 50-piece orchestra, and some powerhouse soloists, this performance is nothing short of spectacular. 🏀 The COC Men’s Basketball team pulled off a nail-biting 71-67 win over L.A. Valley College on Jan. 24, with freshman Justin Perez leading the charge. Perez kicked things off with a clutch three-pointer and sealed the deal with back-to-back free throws in the final seconds. Even with the Monarchs cutting a 13-point lead to just three, the Cougars held firm, shooting 38.9% from beyond the arc and 70.6% from the free-throw line. Big performances from Donovan Cornelius and Raz Orbach, who each scored 19 points, helped the Cougars grab the win. Up next: Saturday, Jan. 25 at Santa Monica College—let’s go, Cougars! (SCV News)

🏗️ Get ready, because the future of the Valencia Town Center is looking very interesting. Centennial, the company behind the massive redevelopment, has dropped some fresh renderings of what’s to come—and spoiler alert: it’s big. With a proposed $900 million investment, we’re talking a new Costco, a 125-room hotel, a central plaza for events, and a parking garage that could cost up to $75 million. Oh, and it could create over 4,000 jobs. But here’s the kicker: the city’s still figuring out how much cash it wants to throw into the mix. More to come! (The Signal)

🏆️ Two CalArtians are heading to the Oscars! James Mangold (Film/Video BFA ’85) scored multiple nominations for his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, including Best Picture and Best Director. Meanwhile, Chris Sanders (Film/Video BFA ’84) earned his fourth Oscar nod for The Wild Robot in the Animated Feature category. With both films making major waves, CalArts is seriously representing at this year’s Academy Awards. Tune in on March 2 to see if these talented alumni bring home the gold! (SCV News)
