🗑️ Rep. George Whitesides (D-Agua Dulce) has introduced a bill to help residents in Val Verde, Castaic, and Santa Clarita who’ve been impacted by the Chiquita Canyon landfill. Right now, the financial help people get from relief programs or legal settlements is taxed like regular income. That means some residents could end up losing access to other important services, like health care or food assistance, just because they received some help. Whitesides’ bill aims to change that by making sure these relief funds aren’t taxed, so people can actually get the support they need without extra financial hurdles. (SCV News)

🏐 The Master’s University beach volleyball team kicked off their 2025 season in style on Feb. 12, coming out on top in two matches in Mesa, Arizona. First, they narrowly defeated Benedictine Mesa 3-2, then cruised to a 4-1 victory over Arizona Christian. The standout players included Faith Wada and Zoe Yates (No. 2 team), and Grace Colburn and Violet Avila (No. 3 team), who dominated their matches with impressive wins. Coach Annett Davis was all smiles, saying, “Our team showed great resilience, with strong performances across the board, especially from our No. 3 and No. 4 pairs. In short? The Sandy ‘Stangs are off to a winning start, and we can’t wait to see what’s next! (SCV News)

🛳️ Princess Cruises, which has called Santa Clarita home since 2001, is officially packing its bags and heading to sunnier shores in South Florida. After a recent announcement, the company confirmed plans to vacate its Valencia offices within the next three years, with the move set to relocate their global headquarters to Miami-Dade County. The shift to Florida is part of a broader strategy to centralize operations and improve collaboration across the company’s North American offices. In addition to the new Miami headquarters, Princess Cruises will maintain an auxiliary office in Seattle, making it the lone remaining North American office for Carnival Corporation, the cruise line’s parent company. Locally, Princess Cruises is looking to sublease a whopping 289,621 square feet of office space in the Valencia area. So if you’ve been eyeing that real estate, now might be your chance. Education

🚫 College of the Canyons just hit "pause" on its $62 million student housing project. After some serious back-and-forth, the governing board decided the costs just didn’t add up. They were planning to build a 209-bed complex, but rising expenses and funding gaps made it too risky to move forward. Some board members were all for it, but others, including the interim Superintendent, said the numbers didn’t work. Plus, running a 24/7 facility with limited funds could be more trouble than it’s worth. The housing may be on hold for now, but the need for affordable student housing is still very real—so don’t expect this conversation to end anytime soon. (The Signal)
