This is The SCV Insider. If fall in Southern California feels like a myth, we’re here to remind you that somewhere between sunscreen and sweaters, the leaves do, in fact, change colors.

Looking for something totally unique to do with the family this weekend? Look no further than the Samuel Dixon Family Health Center’s Rubber Duck Race on Sunday from 11 AM to 3 PM at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center. It’s a day filled with fun, laughter, and, of course… a whole lot of ducks.

Why your family will love this:

  • Duck for a Buck: (Well, five bucks!) For only $5, you can sponsor a duck that will race through the water in thrilling heats. It’s the ultimate test of duck determination—your kids will love watching and cheering them on.

  • Cool Off and Relax: With the sun shining bright, it’s the perfect excuse to take a dip in the pool while the rubber ducks waddle their way to victory. Bring the whole family and make a splash while you’re at it.

  • Community Spirit: This isn’t just a race—it’s a way to give back. All proceeds help provide essential healthcare services to local families, making the event a win-win for everyone.

So, gather the kids, pack your sunscreen, and get ready for a day of unforgettable fun at the Duck Race! Your rubber duck is waiting to make waves.

Fall Foliage in SoCal? Yes, It Exists! 🍂

Southern California might not be known for its fiery fall colors, but don’t let that fool you—there’s plenty of seasonal beauty if you know where to look. Forget about pumpkin spice lattes for a second and let us introduce you to Malibu Creek State Park, where mid-September through early October brings shades of gold and crimson.

If a scenic drive is more your style, Palomar Mountain in San Diego County is a must-see. The Palomar Mountain Loop will give you all the cozy fall vibes, plus Julian’s famed pie. (Because what’s autumn without a slice of apple goodness?)

For a more immersive experience, head to Oak Glen, a town that basically screams “FALL” with its cider mills, pumpkin patches, and forests bursting in color. If you’re planning a mid-October adventure, Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead are perfect for a fall foliage getaway—ideal for snapping a selfie surrounded by the reds, golds, and greens. Get those cameras ready, folks. Autumn is real here, even if it’s brief.

May the Force Be With You at Santa Clarita Kings Day 🏒

Calling all Star Wars fans and hockey lovers! Santa Clarita Kings Day is back on Saturday, December 7, at Crypto.com Arena, where the LA Kings will face off against the Minnesota Wild in a galaxy far, far away (okay, it's just downtown LA, but you get the idea).

Not only do you get to enjoy an epic hockey game, but the first 10,000 fans in attendance will receive a Star Wars-themed neck gaiter. Jedi robes optional. Plus, every ticket comes with a FREE skate pass for The Cube—because what better way to celebrate than with a little ice time?

Tickets range from $38 to $99, and yes, they’re grouped with other SCV residents, so you’ll be cheering alongside your neighbors. Bring your family, your friends, and maybe even your droid.

A Win for Overcrowded Animal Shelters 🐾

Animal shelters in California are packed to the brim, but thanks to California State Senator Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita), a major step toward solving the crisis is now in place. SB 1233, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, will train more veterinarians in High-Quality High-Volume Spay/Neuter techniques, making low- or no-cost procedures more widely available.

Translation: fewer unwanted pets, less overcrowding in shelters, and a much-needed win for animal welfare. With this program in action, California is taking a bold step toward reducing euthanasia rates, especially in areas like the High Desert, where overcrowding has hit a critical level.

So, give your pet an extra cuddle and remember that progress is happening—thanks to Wilk’s efforts, those four-legged friends waiting in shelters now have a brighter future ahead.
