This Saturday: Art, Wine, and a Walk Through Old Town 🍷🎨

Live music, art demos, and a tasting walk? Don’t miss Newhall’s free art event this Saturday!

Good morning, SCV. This is The SCV Insider. When we started this newsletter, it was just me, my laptop, and a very questionable number of iced coffees. And while the coffee habit has remained alarmingly consistent… life? Has gotten a lot busier.

So starting this week, The SCV Insider will be coming to you just once a week. Still full of the local stories, events, and chaotic little gems you’ve come to love—just in a single, well-crafted, inbox-hug of an email.

But here’s where you come in:

I want to know which day of the week you’d most love to see it.

👇️ Click below to vote in our very official, incredibly democratic, possibly-life-changing poll:

Thanks for reading, for showing up, and for being the kind of person who opens a local newsletter in the first place. You're the reason this works. 🤟

(And if you have any questions/comments/concerts, just reply to this email and let me know!)

In today's SCV Insider:

  • This week’s events 🥳

  • Art & wine takeover in Old Town 🎨🍷

  • Chick-fil-A opens new location on the Old Road 🍗

Let’s get into it.

Local Stories

Community

🏗️ Remember The Hartwell project? The five-story mixed-use project planned for Main and Market Streets in Old Town Newhall? After plenty of buzz (and backlash) over its impact on local history, the developer is now asking the city to reduce its previously agreed $750K historic preservation fee to $300K. Why? To help smooth things over with a neighboring business concerned about construction noise.

The original deal (negotiated by Councilmember Laurene Weste before she recused herself) tied the fee to the demolition of a 1930s courthouse with ties to the San Francisquito Dam disaster. City Council will revisit the proposal today and decide whether to approve the updated offer, stick with the original terms, or rewrite the rules entirely. Stay tuned. (The Signal)

Entertainment

🎨🍷 Mark your calendar for this Saturday, May 17 as Old Town Newhall transforms into an open-air celebration of art, culture, and community. From 2 to 5 PM., Old Town Newhall will come alive with live performances, hands-on art demos, and open studios from more than 15 creative spaces (think ARTree, Purple Planet, and Empire Dance). It’s the perfect afternoon for art lovers, curious minds, and families looking for something fun and free.

Then, starting at 5 PM, the vibe turns delightfully grown-up with a wine and beer tasting walk featuring sips from local favorites like Pulchella Winery and Brewery Draconum. Grab your free tote and event map at the info booth near Main Street, and get ready to mingle with artists, discover hidden gems, and toast to a night of local creativity.

Art by day, wine by dusk (don’t miss it!)

Business

🍗 Chick-fil-A’s newest SCV location is officially open for business, bringing waffle fries, drive-thru ease, and 80 new jobs to The Old Road near I-5 and Magic Mountain Parkway. This spot is built for convenience, with dual drive-thru lanes, a walk-up window, curbside pickup, and outdoor seating—all designed to get you your nuggets faster (because no one likes a long lunch line).

Local operator Tom Williams (also behind the Valencia Town Center location currently under renovation) is running the show with his wife Meaghan and their two kids. They celebrated the grand opening with serious heart: 100 local heroes received free Chick-fil-A entrées for a year, and the company is donating $25,000 to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank through Feeding America. Education

🤖 Project 691 is inviting the community to a robot-powered afternoon of innovation and inspiration this Saturday, May 17, from 1–3 p.m. at West Ranch High School. Nearly 40 students from across the Hart District will show off their custom-built robot, the result of more than 150 hours of engineering work this semester.

The team built their bot for this year’s underwater-themed challenge from FIRST Robotics, a global STEM nonprofit. Expect demos, tech talk, and a peek into how these students are bringing coding, design, and problem-solving to life—plus a little friendly recruiting for next year’s team.

New to robotics or just curious? This is a great event for aspiring engineers and families to learn more about STEM in action. (The Signal)
