Good morning, SCV. This is The SCV Insider. Labor Day is upon us—the unofficial end of summer. Which is funny, because pretty sure Santa Clarita weather has zero plans to cooperate with that narrative.

In today's SCV Insider:

  • Upcoming events 🥳

  • City podcast dives into SCV’s biking scene and trails 🌄

  • Vendor spots open for upcoming Trunk or Treat 🎃

Let’s get into it.

Local Stories

Community

🎙️ Santa Clarita Voices is going off-road. The city’s official podcast just dropped an episode featuring pro mountain biker and local legend Spencer Rathkamp — the guy who makes bunny hops look like an Olympic sport. He joins City Manager Ken Striplin and Director of Neighborhood Services Jerrid McKenna to talk about life as a pro rider, the thrill (and spills) of living on two wheels, and why SCV’s shiny new Haskell Canyon Bike Park is basically Christmas morning for mountain bikers. Expect insider tea on the park’s slopestyle lines, downhill jumps, pump tracks, and why it’s set to put Santa Clarita on the map as a legit biking destination. Rathkamp also dishes on what keeps him pedaling, and spoiler: it’s not just electrolytes. Catch the episode now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or YouTube — and subscribe to Santa Clarita Voices so you don’t miss the next time the city gets chatty with a hometown changemaker. (SCV News)

Business

🎃 Calling all spooky entrepreneurs! The SCV Boss Ladies are gearing up for their annual Trunk or Treat on Thursday, Oct. 23, and they’re looking for vendors who want to mix business with a side of candy corn. This family-friendly Halloween bash is the perfect chance to promote your business, connect with local families, and show off your festive flair. Vendor spots are affordable, too:

  • $40 for product vendors (selling items at the event)

  • $25 for professional service vendors

It’s a night of costumes, community, and commerce — because who says you can’t hand out Snickers and business cards at the same time? Apply HERE! (SCV News)

Entertainment

📖 Saugus grad David Doyle is making moves from the football field to the bookshelf. His debut novel Parker follows a 12-year-old football prodigy chasing big dreams while navigating a life-changing family secret. Doyle — a 1992 Saugus High alum, former Division I athlete, and longtime educator — says he wrote the story so young readers, especially students of color, could see themselves on the page. Already being picked up by schools nationwide, Parker is Doyle’s way of giving back to the SCV community that shaped him. (The Signal)
